Over 80 international delegates attending the 2026 Global Mayors Dialogue · Wuhan and the Wuhan International Friendship Cities Cooperation Conference explored the technological innovations of Optics Valley of China (OVC) up close on Sept 19.

Curious about the "OVC Intelligent Manufacturing", the guests visited Xiaomi's Wuhan Smart Factory. This massive facility, covering over 750 mu (50 hectares) with a total planned investment of more than 2.5 billion yuan ($373.35 million), was completed in just 11 months.

Shaukat Ali, mayor of Manchester in the United Kingdom, expressed amazement at the factory's swift completion and efficient design. He noted the potential for technological collaboration between Manchester and Wuhan, stating, "I would love to have such a factory in Manchester." He also highlighted that OVC's urban planning offers valuable insights for his city.

The mayors and delegates also experienced the Optics Valley Skyrail. As the train glided along the skyline, many couldn't resist capturing the moment on their phones. Mikko Koivulehto, chairman of the Kemi City Council in Finland, even jumped on the Skyrail's transparent glass floor, testing its impressive durability firsthand.

At the HGTECH Laser Museum, over 300 exhibits showcased HGTECH's journey from laser marking to achieving more than 70 "firsts" in China. However, the real attraction was the "robotic barista" in the company lobby. Guests eagerly queued to scan a QR code, and within minutes, a robotic arm delivered a freshly brewed coffee right into their hands.

From the Skyrail to smart factories and robot-made coffee, Wuhan seamlessly integrates technological innovation into transportation, manufacturing, and everyday life, offering global city representatives a glimpse into the future of urban development.
