Wuhan ranks in CGT City Innovation Index

On March 31, Elsevier, a leading international academic publisher, in collaboration with authoritative institutions, released the "Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) City Innovation Index". Among the top 30 cities globally, Wuhan in Hubei province ranks 24th and 3rd among the five Chinese cities listed.

Sun Yan, managing director of Elsevier's Global Journals China Division, stated, "In the wave of global biomedical innovation, cell and gene therapy are making revolutionary breakthroughs, reshaping the future of medicine. To accurately depict the innovative landscape in this field, Elsevier has partnered with authoritative institutions to launch the 'Cell and Gene Therapy City Innovation Index', providing a ranking of innovation in this sector."

The evaluation assesses dimensions such as research resources, academic originality, research influence, and industry-academia integration. The specific rankings of Chinese cities among the global top 30 are Beijing (3rd), Shanghai (6th), Wuhan (24th), Guangzhou (25th), and Hangzhou (27th). Wuhan, recognized for its groundbreaking research in gene editing tool development, scored 58.1, tying with the United States' global biopharmaceutical hub, San Diego.

According to data from the Wuhan science and technology bureau, the city has established a preliminary high-end medical equipment and biopharmaceutical innovation cluster, with over 4,500 market entities and an industry scale approaching 500 billion yuan ($68.58 billion).
