A total of 50 hydrogen commuter buses for demonstration application were delivered in the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC).

Demand for new energy commuter vehicle services has been surging especially in OVC. The majority of clients for the new buses are based in the valley, said a staff member from Wuhan Tielong Commuter Car Service Co, which is also offering car rental services.

In pursuit of zero carbon emissions, clients such as colleges, governments and high-tech enterprises are increasing. The Optics Valley campus of the China University of Geosciences – one of the clients – considers new energy commuter buses to be highly effective, more dependable, less noisy, and more comfortable than traditional petrol vehicles.

At present, the hydrogen commuter buses are 20 percent more expensive than their diesel counterparts, while their fuel costs are 20 percent lower.

Wuhan currently has 260 hydrogen vehicles being used in public transportation, logistics and commuting.

According to the city's proposals on supporting the development of the hydrogen energy industry, Wuhan will consider promoting the use of 3,000 fuel cell vehicles for public services.
