Today is the World Cities Day, which is the first international day initiated by China, and was first celebrated in 2014. It is themed on "better city, better life", and the activity theme for this year is "act local to go global".

As a sub-center of Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province, the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC) is young and beautiful, featuring both arrays of skyscrapers and natural landscapes.

To make the new city function better, the OVC government has rolled out a three-year fine city management campaign, with an eye to making the valley a nationally influential industry-city integrated demonstration area, and a successful example for the megacity governance. The valley is said to be greener, smarter, more livable and resilient in the future, as modern technologies have been adopted in local application scenarios. For example, a smart garbage classification surveillance and management platform has been established, making all the data produced through the garbage transporting and cleaning processes traceable.
