The inspiring slogan "push your limits, break others' prejudices, and change the status quo" can be seen at the headquarters of HGTECH Co – the first laser-based high-tech company to go public in China, a leading company in China's laser industry and one of the top 100 Chinese electronic information companies.

The company is located in the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC).

The company recently delivered handsome results in its semi-annual reports: from January to June this year, HGTECH generated 6.22 billion yuan ($919.32 million) in revenue and 563 million yuan in profit, a surge of 61.34 percent compared with the same period last year.

Founded originally by Huazhong University of Science and Technology, HGTECH is now moving into the East Lake Science City. According to Ma Xinqiang, president of the firm, HGTECH has been working to rid itself of the label of school-run enterprise and follow a market-oriented path.

In June 2000, it was successfully listed and was among the first domestic enterprises in the laser industry to go global. In addition, the company has responded to the nation's call to cooperate with local State-owned asset management institutions and bring in more social funds.

In 2007, HGTECH optimized its industrial structure and shifted its focus to lasers, information lasers, and sensors. Eight years later, it won first place in the National Awards for Progress in Science and Technology and now occupies 90 percent of the domestic market share. Its new welding equipment and production line solutions have been widely accepted in the new energy vehicle sector.

Scientific innovation is not possible without investment and talent. Statistics show that over the past 10 years, HGTECH has recruited more than 50 high-end personnel, who have helped the firm catch up with international laser giants. Since 2015, HGTECH has hired about 200 college graduates from renowned universities every year. This year, it has become the first in Hubei to be authorized for independent review rights for professional senior titles in electronic information and machinery.

"The golden age for high-tech manufacturing engineers has come. Scientific workers are not just spectators of the era, but rather builders and pioneers of our time," said Ma in a speech delivered on July 28.
