Since 2021, the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC) has been working to enhance its ties with Enshi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture in Central China's Hubei province, and help it develop special industries based on its existing natural resources and geography.

The valley has provided generous assistance to Enshi to help it build and operate projects, cultivate talent, and improve its finances. Last year, OVC invested 30 million yuan ($4.53 million) into 11 projects based in Enshi, eight of which have now been completed.

The cardamine violifolia R&D base, which received 2 million yuan in support from the valley and is located in Longma village, Enshi, has now begun operating. Cardamine violifolia is a highly useful vegetable that can collect selenium from the soil and make it absorbable to human bodies. Every kilogram of cardamine violifolia contains about 8,000 milligrams of selenium.

About 90 kilometers from Longma village is Banqiao town, which is famous for codonopsis pilosula, a Chinese medicinal herb. A traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industrial park with a total investment of 10 million yuan will be established there in June this year. The valley has offered 2 million yuan in funds to help build supporting facilities for the park.

"The park is expected to reduce production costs for market entities and help foster TCM industrial clusters," said Pan Xiang, director of the town's agricultural service center.

The valley has also invested 1.5 million yuan in a tea plantation located in Mazhe village to improve villagers' living standards by paving pedestrian streets, setting up tea culture corridors, and building parking lots for tourists.
