The launch ceremony for major projects to be carried out in the second quarter of this year was held in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei province, on April 27, with a sub-venue set up simultaneously in the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC).

Liu Jie, secretary of OVC's working committee, announced the launch of the valley’s major projects to Wuhan government officials via video link.

There are 27 projects being launched in the valley, involving a total investment of 19.32 billion yuan ($2.96 billion) and including the construction of Xiaomi Wuhan Sci-Tech Park, the second phase of the Wuhan Biological and Agricultural Base, Weilai First Road, Guanggu Eighth Road and more.

The majority of these projects focus on OVC's two trillion-yuan industries – biomedicine and the "optics, IC, displays, terminals and internet" industrial cluster, with others involving the digital economy and other emerging sectors.

The Xiaomi Wuhan Sci-Tech Park will be located to the west of the Optics Valley ecological corridor, just 4.2 kilometers from Xiaomi's Wuhan headquarters (if looking at the shortest distance). The park is expected to become a major R&D center for the company.

With an investment of 1.1 billion yuan, the second phase of the Wuhan Biological and Agricultural Base will consist of research buildings, supporting buildings and modern workshops. Construction is scheduled to finish in July 2024, after a which a number of high-tech enterprises in biology and agriculture will be brought in.

Guanggu Eighth Road will be one of OVC's arterial roads and a major access point to the core area of the East Lake Science City. The road is estimated to be 1,374 meters long and connect with the Optics Valley Science Island, Biolake, Wuhan Future City, and Huashan Ecological New City.

During the event, 98 infrastructure programs in education, healthcare, housing, transportation, greening, and power supply were also launched by the valley's government, with an eye to building OVC into a more hospitable, resilient, intelligent, and humane place.
