More detailed plans on the Wuhan East Lake Science City, which is located in the eastern part of the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC), were released at a news conference on Sept 3.

Wang Xiangwang, secretary of the Party work committee of the Optics Valley, explained the overall planning of the science city.

The strategic development goal of the city is to become a global innovation center for optoelectronics information, living and health, carbon mutuality, and intelligent manufacturing. The city will focus on science, innovation, and industrial core competitiveness.

The construction of the science city will follow three steps – by 2025, the framework will be complete; by 2035, all the essential functions will be fulfilled; and by 2050, the city will achieve its strategic development goal and become a top global innovation center.

With a planned construction area of 100 square kilometers, the science city mainly relies on Gaoxin Avenue and Weilai Avenue to form an "arrowhead" shape in space, following the "science + scientist + innovative ecology" model, and coordinating the industrial, innovation, and talent chains.

Two major national technological pieces of infrastructure, 39 State-level corporate research platforms, and 3,100 national high-tech enterprises and high-end R&D centers have already been established in the science city.
