East Lake High-tech Development Zone -- also known as Optics Valley of China, located in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province -- is to award prestigious scholarships to students at Wuhan University, according to local media reports on Dec 25.

It will set up the Wuhan University-Optics Valley scholarship (big health award) for 10 years (2021-2030), with a total donation of 10 million yuan ($1.53 million) and an annual donation of 1 million yuan.

In November, the zone put together an overall China Optics Valley university scholarship blueprint. It decided to select 10 leading universities to set up 10 annual scholarships, with a single scholarship amount of 1 million per year -- to award scholarships for students in majors of science, engineering, agronomy, medicine and law.

Under the measures, the scholarship set up at Wuhan University will be divided into three categories.

The first category is mainly for full-time master and doctorate students with excellent character and learning -- who are studying in some specific colleges, institutes and schools at the university.

The second category is for on-the-job researchers in the field of biology at the university.

The third category is for high-level technology, management and investment talent for biological enterprises in the zone.
