Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone -- or Optics Valley of China -- in central Hubei province launched 116 major projects on Jan 11, involving a total investment of over 271 billion yuan ($39.34 billion), according to zone officials.

Among the projects, eight will be constructed in Optics Valley of China, involving innovation, industrial developments and livelihoods, with a total investment of 17.5 billion yuan.

Officials said that one example is the second stage of the zone's Biolake. The Wuhan National Bio-industry Base, also known as the Biolake, is China's second largest state-level biotech industrial base.

Officials said phase 2 of Biolake will cover an area of 17 hectares, with a planned investment of 5.1 billion yuan.

It will feature headquarters and R&D companies.

By introducing sub fields in the biological health industry, the project will become an intelligent industrial park with the functions of business, R&D and conferences.

It will also form a complete health care industrial chain with diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and health management.

Elsewhere, the zone is involved with recycling project, called a sponge city renovation project. This project are aims at retaining water and recycling rainfall, to help reduce flooding and curb soil erosion.

The Optics Valley of China project is in its Tangxunhu area, where it will construct low-impact development facilities, a drain pipe network, rainwater storage and recycling and improve the landscape in 17 communities.
