The country's first 5G campus network went into trial at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in East Lake High-tech Development Zone (Optics Valley of China) in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei province, on Feb 20.

Applications such as 5G distance teaching and 5G night vision drones for campus patrol will gradually be launched at the university.

It is an important achievement for the effort of China Mobile Group Hubei Company and HUST to establish a 5G industrial development laboratory in the province.

The company has built 100 5G base stations in some areas of Wuhan such as Optics Valley and Jianghan district, and the stations are currently undergoing tests.

In addition, the company will invest 1 billion yuan ($149.23 million) in Hubei province to build 2,000 5G base stations in 2019, among which 1,500 will be set up in Wuhan, covering areas including venues of the 7th Military World Games, which will be held in the city from Oct 18 to 27.
