One fiber can support 13.5 billion calls at the same time

On Feb 5, FiberHome Technologies announced that the optical transmission system experiment of 560Tb/s large capacity WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) and SDM (space division multiplexing) was successful. This is the first time this has been achieved in China and places the company in the field of international competition. 

China continues to make big progress in the research of large capacity, long distance and high speed rate optical transmission systems. This means that one fiber can support 13.5 million people calling at the same time, and that 17,920 4G movies can be transferred in one second. 

The success of the experiment lies in a single mode seven-core fiber as the transmission medium. Compared with general fibers, a single mode seven-core fiber is equal to the joint force of seven general fibers. Supposing that optical communication is like a highway and the general fiber is a single lane, the single mode seven-core fiber is a parallel seven-car lane, providing 7 times the transmission capability of an ordinary one. 

As the applications of mobile internet, cloud computing, big data and Internet of Things grow rapidly, a steep flow rise has posed great challenges to the information communication network. Solving the skyrocketing amount of network data flow is becoming more important to compete in the global information communication field.
