The total revenue of biomedicine enterprises in the Optics Valley reached 100.5 billion yuan ($14.6 billion), up 25.3 percent in 2016. It is the first time that biomedical revenue has broken through 100 billion yuan, and as a result, the five pillar industries of Optics Valley all pass 100 billion yuan.

Since 2013, Optics Valley has been accelerating innovation and nearly creates a 100 billion yuan industry every year. The optoelectronic information, biomedicine, high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy, energy conservation and environmental protection as well as modern service industries generated a total income of 1.14 trillion yuan in 2016, with an annual growth of 13 percent. The optoelectronic information industry attained 500.2 billion yuan, while the high-end equipment manufacturing industry took in 127.4 billion yuan. The new energy, energy conservation and environmental protection industry yielded 116.9 billion yuan while the high-tech service industry arrived at 2.569 billion yuan, an increase of 21 percent.

Among the 30 key industrial enterprises, 16 grew at a rate of more than 20 percent, including Lenovo Wuhan Base at 41.97 percent, Humanwell Healthcare at 24.52 percent, Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable at 34.77 percent and Shenglong Electronic Group at 33.23 percent.

Without a series of key projects, Optics Valley’s new economy would not have developed at such an extensive rate. Optics Valley introduced two 10 billion yuan projects and five 5 billion yuan projects, and attracted 12 world-renowned enterprise research and development institutions. The National Memory Base Project, worth 160 billion yuan, is Hubei province’s largest single investment project.

According to the Administrative Committee of Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone, Optics Valley will continue to develop emerging industries, expand the optical communication, laser, semiconductor industries and accelerate the fusion and development of next generation IT and the bioindustry.

In addition, it will lay an emphasis on numerically controlled machine tools, robots, ocean engineering equipment, petroleum equipment and 3D printing and develop air pollution control, new energy automobiles and smart grids. The modern service industry will focus on mobile internet.
