OVC transforms idle urban spaces into community hubs
A previously unused area beneath the Sanhuanxian viaduct in Optics Valley of China (OVC) has been transformed into a 20,000-square-meter public space where residents can relax, socialize and spend time with their families. Known as Heyeshan Community Friendly Space, the area features colorful murals on 11 bridge piers and offers places for activities such as chess and tea drinking.

Since the beginning of this year, over 20 such "space renewal" projects have been launched across OVC. Several under-bridge areas and vacant plots have been transformed into parks and parking lots, freeing up over 30,000 non-motorized parking spaces and providing new conveniences for residents.
Wujiaotang Sports Hub, OVC's first pilot project to repurpose space beneath a viaduct, began trial operations in May. It is located at the intersection of Guanggu Avenue and Xiongchu Avenue. The project covers 27,000 square meters of previously unused bridge space and features three main areas: a lawn, a pet zone, and a fitness area, which includes three professional sports venues.

A vacant lot under the Zuoling Avenue viaduct has been converted into a parking lot with 187 small vehicle spaces, offering free, 24-hour access to employees and nearby residents.
Some idle plots in OVC have undergone "micro-renewals". At the intersection of Guanggu Sixth Road and Wucai East Street, a scattered vacant lot has been turned into a pocket park.
This park features varied landscaping, and 12 manhole covers have been designed as "urban badges", showcasing OVC landmarks like Optics Valley Square and Wuhan Future City, becoming popular spots for passersby to take photos.
