The two players share a history, having teamed up as juniors to win the 2018 Wimbledon Girls' Doubles title, marking the first time a Chinese duo achieved this feat. Wang Xinyu, ranked 39th in the world, made headlines in 2024 by reaching the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event at Wuhan after four consecutive victories. Meanwhile, Wang Xiyu, ranked 91st, recently clinched the women's singles gold at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

This match marked her return to competitive singles play in China following her Asian Games victory, where she aimed to "run, hit, and play each shot to the best of my ability."

The Wuhan Open's opening ceremony began at 7 pm on the central court, featuring a dazzling light show followed by traditional cultural performances and musical theater that showcased Hubei province's beauty. The ceremony included a flag parade and a special appearance by former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, who joined guests in officially kicking off the 2026 event.
