The qualifying draw for the 2026 Wuhan Open has been announced, featuring a host of prominent players eager to secure one of the eight coveted spots in the main draw. Among the contenders are former Australian Open finalist Zheng Qinwen, former world No 2 Paula Badosa, and China's own Zhang Shuai.

Zheng Qinwen, who made history in 2024 by reaching the Wuhan Open singles final – the best performance by a Chinese player at the event – returns with renewed vigor. At the US Open, she defeated Grand Slam champions Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek and achieved a seven-match winning streak to reach the quarterfinals, significantly boosting her world ranking.

Zhang Shuai, another fan favorite, made an impressive run to the last 16 at last year's Wuhan Open. Notably, she orchestrated a thrilling first-round comeback, toppling 14th seed Emma Navarro and marking her first singles victory at the event in seven years.

Spanish star Paula Badosa, who once ranked as high as No 2 in the world, is set to make her Wuhan debut. Badosa reached the semifinals of the 2025 Australian Open and has previously won WTA 1000 titles, making her a formidable competitor.

Other notable entrants include Liudmila Samsonova, who reached the last 16 in Wuhan last year, and Anhelina Kalinina, a former WTA 1000 runner-up, both aiming to secure their spots in the main draw.

The qualifying rounds will run from Oct 10 to 11 and feature 32 slots. After two rounds of intense competition, eight players will earn their places in the main draw, where they will compete against top-ranked stars such as Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek.
