A smartphone frame and a smartwatch case are easy to spot; the tiny cooling channels inside an AI server are not. But for HG Laser, a subsidiary of Wuhan-based HGTECH Group, independently developed industrial metal 3D printing can make all the precise parts.
Zhang Shizhuo, assistant general manager of the company's 3D printing division, said that compared with conventional computer numerical control machining, laser 3D printing has greatly shortened production time and lowered the costs in making consumer electronics components.

Meanwhile, the process allows manufacturers to provide customized services based on the demands of customers, he said.
Laser 3D printing is also used in heat dissipation components for AI servers, according to Zhang.
As chips generate more heat, cooling systems require finer channels for liquid circulation.
Zhang said the equipment can print liquid-cooling plates with internal coolant channels as narrow as 100 microns, which helps dissipate heat and ensures stable operation of the servers over long periods.

Nw, HG Laser can use its 3D printing technology to produce key components for the consumer electronics and AI sectors on a stable and scalable basis, he added.

And its parent company, HGTECH Group, has grown from an equipment maker in Wuhan's Optics Valley into a company serving both domestic and overseas markets.

When the HGTECH Group was founded in 1999, annual sales were below 80 million yuan($11.93 million), Deng Jiake, general manager of HG Laser, said.
Last year, the company's market value exceeded 100 billion, Deng added.
In the first half of this year, HGTECH Group's overseas revenue reached 1.65 billion yuan, up 116 percent from a year earlier, according to its half-year report.
Overseas sales accounted for over 20 percent of total revenue, and the company's products are sold in more than 90 countries and regions.
"Innovation is the driving force behind a company's growth, and in technological development, perseverance leads to success," he said.
