HUST vacuum robot boosts high-end manufacturing
A team from the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) has developed a groundbreaking vacuum suction robot, which has garnered significant attention.
Resembling a robotic cleaner, the device operates independently, performing tasks such as wall adhesion, curved surface navigation, and inverted walking. Dubbed the "Spider-Man" robot for its impressive aerial capabilities, it holds promise for a wide range of advanced industrial applications.
The project, which took a decade to develop, began as a student assignment focused on window-cleaning robots. In 2016, Shi Ying, then an undergraduate and now a key team member, shifted the research focus from civilian cleaning applications to heavy industrial tasks, such as polishing large-scale structures like ships, wind turbine blades, and steel bridges.
To adapt to complex industrial environments, the team overcame several technical challenges. They designed a bionic suction chamber to address issues such as air leakage, slippage, and detachment during curved-surface operations. Additionally, they iterated the device multiple times to enhance its dust-resistant capabilities for high-intensity operations.
The project has already secured over 60 patents, with its core technology being fully self-reliant. Several enterprises have expressed interest in collaboration, signaling that the innovation is set to inject new momentum into the intelligent upgrade of high-end equipment manufacturing.
