The year 2018 marked the 30th anniversary of the construction of Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone -- also known as Optics Valley -- in Wuhan in Central China's Hubei province.
Over the past three decades, the zone has steadfastly kept in mind its original intentions and mission of "developing high technology and realizing industrialization" and has achieved many goals in the field of innovation.
The following content is from the innovation and development report released by Optics Valley in 2018.
Taking science and technology as the guide to build an international innovation Optics Valley, the zone has achieved:
(1). "1133" innovation space layout.
(2). The construction of major innovation platforms has been accelerated and new breakthroughs have been made in key core technologies.
(3). The layout of industrial innovation consortium has been accelerated and the construction of an industrial technology research institute has been promoted.
(4). As of the end of 2018, five Optics Valley enterprises were selected on the list of "The 2018 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard" top 2,500 enterprises.
(5). There are 304 enterprises R & D platforms at or above the provincial level.
(6). There are 60 business incubators, including 17 at the national level; 98 maker spaces, including 30 at the national level; more than 500 start-up service institutions of all kinds. The total incubation area covers more than 5.5 million square meters, with more than 5,000 enterprises under incubation.
(7). The transformation of scientific and technological achievements was accelerated and 17 promotion activities for the transformation and commercialization of professional scientific and technological achievements were held. More than 70 major scientific and technological achievements were signed and implemented, and more than 30 academician projects were implemented in Optics Valley.
(8). Throughout the year, patent applications from all the enterprises and institutions in the zone totaled 30,000 -- including 18,000 invention patents, 15,000 patent authorizations, 6,000 invention patents, 1,212 PCT international patent applications, 47 revised international standards, 421 national standards and 524 industry standards.
(9). Multi-level recruiting of talented innovation and entrepreneurship professionals, including four Nobel Prize winners, 397 national high-level talents, 182 provincial high-level talents in Hubei province and 1,699 talents from the "3551Optics Valley Talent Plan".
(10). There are 20,437 newly registered enterprises in the zone, including 2,308 high-tech enterprises. There are 355 gazelle enterprises, or fast-growing companies, in the zone, more than 10 times the number seven years ago. Of these, 29 gazelle enterprises have increased their income by more than 500 percent and 120 gazelle enterprises have doubled their income. There are five unicorn enterprises in the total.
