The East Lake High-tech Development Zone is home to a group of 16 state-level industrial bases, such as the optoelectronic industry base, the biological industry base – Biolake -- and the geo-spatial information industry base. It is accelerating the development of emerging industries and has formed an industry system that features optoelectronic information, bioindustry, energy conservation & environmental protection, high-end equipment manufacturing and high-tech service industries.

In the optoelectronic information industry: it has produced China’s first optical fiber and optical transmission system. It is home to China’s largest research, development and production base for fiber optic cables, photoelectric devices and its largest laser industry base. It boasts the only national laboratory in the optoelectronic field, the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, which is China’s major globally competitive player. In 2015, the total revenue of the optoelectronic information industry was 442 billion yuan, up 20.16 percent year-on-year.
